Gregory John Griffiths

We are sad to announce that Gregory John Griffiths has left the stage, taken his final bow, and—if we know him at all—was immediately greeted at Heaven’s gates with a standing ovation, a hug from Jesus, and a group of strangers he’s already quickly turning into eternal friends.

Greg was born to Marion Catherine Smith and John Morgan Griffiths on February 25th, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Greg’s childhood wasn’t easy, but that never defined him. Born into challenges that could have hardened his heart, he chose a different path—one paved with kindness, laughter, and an unshakable belief that life was meant to be lived with joy. Greg graduated from Olympus High School in 1969 and served faithfully as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints in the Northwestern States Mission.

In 1975, Greg met the love of his life, Debbie Schoonmaker, while auditioning for Mormon Youth Chorus (Debbie was the accompanist there in the office). Music would become a lifelong cornerstone of their marriage and family life. They became eternal companions on March 4, 1977, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they built a family of seven amazing kids who are his greatest treasures. Through every joy and every sorrow—including the heartbreaking loss of a son, Davy, to SIDS—Greg’s faith in God and Jesus Christ never wavered. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he didn’t just talk about love and service—he lived it. If you needed help, Greg was there. If you needed a laugh, Greg had one ready.

Greg was not just a man; he was a force of nature. Greg didn’t just enter a room—he took it over. Greg’s talents were as big as his heart. A gifted singer once compared to Pavarotti, his voice could shake the rafters and penetrate your soul. Some of his cherished memories included performing with his wife in the Utah Opera Company, the Intimate Opera Company and singing with Debbie in the Tabernacle Choir.

As a true artist, Greg saw the world in color—and if the color wasn’t quite right, he fixed it. No room was complete until it had just the right touch of warmth, elegance, and, let’s be honest, probably a bit of gold trim and a naked cherubim or two. Greg excelled at being a master interior designer and was adored by his clients and was known for his amazing floral arrangements, teaching many people the art, holding classes over the years. For many years, he ran the Stevenson House Reception Center in Cottonwood Heights, with his mother, Marion, until her death, wearing every hat possible as a jack of all trades. A true artist in every sense, Greg had the uncanny ability to turn anyspace into something out of a magazine—whether it was a home, a business, a church function or just setting up Christmas at home, Greg had the magic touch.

Greg’s ability to make friends was unmatched—he could walk into a room knowing no one and leave knowing everyone’s life story (and in under 15 minutes). If Greg loved you, you knew it, and let’s be honest—Greg loved everyone. He had an unmatched ability to make you feel like the most important person when he talked to you.

Though he has left his earthly home in Murray, Utah, Greg’s legacy lives on in his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and the countless people lucky enough to have known him. While we will miss his voice, his laughter, and his enormous heart. We take comfort in knowing that Heaven just got a lot more joyful (and probably a bit louder).

So, in Greg’s honor, laugh a little louder, sing a little bigger, and never hesitate to make a new friend. And if you ever hear a warm, booming chuckle in the wind—don’t be surprised. That’s just Greg, reminding us that love and laughter never really leave. He is just checking in.

Greg is survived by his wife, Debbie; children, Angie (Dan) Call, Kelly (Laura) Griffiths, Melody Griffiths, Jessica Griffiths, Adam (Wendi) Griffiths, and Jennilyn Griffiths. Also, his beloved grandchildren, who he adored: Josh Call, Natalie Call, Mary Griffiths, Kaylee Call, Samara Griffiths, Jackson Call and Eli Griffiths. Preceded in death by parents; son, David Michael Griffiths; and sister, Jenny Lynn Poulsen.

The family would like to thank all the love and kindness that they have been shown during this difficult time. A special thank you to the wound care doctors, and his special nurse Lisa; also, to the many dear friends who have helped him many times with his needs. We have been so richly blessed by your love.
