Gerrit Timmerman III, 78, of Millcreek, Utah, passed away peacefully with his little dog curled up next to him on June 19, 2021, after a 3-year battle with Leukemia. Gerrit was born on July 27, 1942, to loving parents Gerrit Timmerman Jr. and Jacqueline Mae Loomis in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gerrit was the oldest of three children. He grew up in the family home designed and built by his father. He had many fond memories of living in the Mount Olympus area.
Gerrit graduated from Olympus High School in 1960 and went on to study at the University of Utah. In 1961, he served a two-and-a-half-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the West German Mission. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in German in August 1969.
He spent several years in private practice with his own business as a dental technician in Salt Lake. He made thousands of teeth during his career. Gerrit had an eye for detail and was a talented artist who enjoyed several mediums of art. In the 1980s, he created several sculptures, which were cast into bronze. He also created bas-relief sculptures, which were cast in marble and bronze-filled resins. In 1982, he received awards in national competitions for his art pieces. At that time, his artwork and biography were published in the book Contemporary Western Artists. Many family members have his sculptures in their homes.
Gerrit took a great interest in American history, the legal system, and tax law. He was an avid researcher and reader of old books and law books. He spent the last half of his life working as a paralegal and law researcher. He often shared his perspectives about the constitution, legal system and tax law with his friends, associates and family. He was proud of his skills and often said, "I should have been a lawyer."
There were many other passions that brought Gerrit joy in his life. He loved to spend time in the kitchen and took pride in his ability to get each recipe just right. He enjoyed great music, he loved good movies, especially documentaries. His house was filled with meaningful relics acquired over the years, including his prized collection of law books. He loved his children and enjoyed seeing them pursue their ambitions. We will miss his good sense of humor amid life's challenges and his ability to toss a good joke into a conversation to make everyone laugh.
He married Margaret Mary Dean on December 17, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple. They divorced in 1984. Together they have 6 children and 25 grandchildren: Michelle Mason (Brent), Katy, TX; Leslie Smoot (Paul), Midway, UT; Lisa Giauque (Chris), Holladay, UT; Gerrit Timmerman (Stacey), Sandy; UT, David Timmerman (Amy), Holladay, UT; Katie Warner (Ramsey), Millcreek, UT.
Gerrit and Kimberly Hagee were in a relationship together for over eight years. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren: Lacy Moody (Martin), Los Angeles, CA; Brittany Timmerman, Salt Lake City, UT.
Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his two younger sisters, Jacquelynne Soutas (Robert) of Salt Lake City, UT and Marcia Timmerman of Farmington, UT. Gerrit will be greatly missed by his 8 children and 29 grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper, UT 84020, on Monday, June 28 at 10:00 am. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 pm. Gerrit will be laid to rest at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Drive, Millcreek, UT 84106.
