George Simon Thome, 91, passed away on January 18, 2025. He was born on September 6, 1933, in Foreston, Minnesota. He attended Mille Laca High School and graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the Army National Guard from 1951-1953. He graduated from Drew Business College in 1956 as an accountant. He worked for Gamble Robinson/Pacific Fruit & Produce for 33 years. After that he worked for the 1990 U.S. Census and the State of Utah.
He married the love of his life Janet Harken on September 14, 1957, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City, Montana. Where they chose to start their life together. The same year he became a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a 50-year member of Blessed Sacrmant Catholic Church in Sandy, Utah.
George had many interests, one of which was working with computers. After he retired, he repaired & revamped old, discarded computers and donated them to various thrift stores and organizations ready to be used again. He also was an avid rock collector, a passion which he passed on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And of course, as a Minnesota native he was a die-hard Vikings fan, never wavering on his loyalty for them. He also loved to travel with his wife, Jan, and they had many adventures over the years including numerous trips with his brother Peter and his wife Mary.
If you knew George, you knew his whole life and purpose was his wife and family. He made every family event a priority and attended as many of the sporting events and activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren as he could. He had a heart of gold and wanted to take care of and feed the world. You couldn’t go to his house without being offered food or something. He especially loved to give out snacks and his many kinds of doughnuts to the grandchildren & great-grandchildren. His giving heart even extended to feeding all the cats that showed up in their yard. He was known for his “George-isms” as they were called. His little bits of wisdom that he loved to share with his family & friends.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of 67 years, his children, Brian (Valerie), Karen, Shelly (John), Chris (ChiKaye). Grandchildren, Angelique, Jonelle (Shane), Shelisa, Coreena (Matt), Marissa (Manti), Danny (Haley), Brittney (Ryan), Mikey (Amy Jo), Maranda (Austin), Marcus (Amy), Dannika, Brayden, Devin, Jaydra (Parker), Jerrick, CR, CC, and 24 great-grandchildren, brother Peter (Mary), sister-in-law Gloria and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Constance (Roehl) Thome, and his brothers, Leo (Jean), and Larry and his sisters, Mary Ann (Bud) Molin, Irene (Tom) Rafferty and Julie Therrien.
