George Moody Mccune

George Moody McCune, 77, of North Las Vegas, Nevada died peacefully at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at his home with his wife and son at his side.

He was born on August 31, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah to James Paxman and Elizabeth Irene Moody McCune. He was the second of five children. As a child he grew up in the "House that Betty Built," Nephi, Utah as he would always say. As a boy he delivered newspapers around Nephi to earn money to attend the National Boy Scouts Jamboree at Valley Forge, PA.

During his time attending Nephi High School (later Juab High School), he participated in two school plays and earned a letter for competing on the school wrestling team. After graduating with honors in May of 1961, he started school at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah starting out majoring in journalism.

In the summer of 1963 he put in his papers to serve a two and a half year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was called to serve in the Northern Far East Mission, which consisted of all of Japan and Korea at the time. Serving the people of Japan was a great experience for him. With only a couple of months left on his mission, tragedy struck his family as his mother suddenly passed away. George decided stay and finish his mission in Japan and returned home March of 1966.

After his church mission, George returned to BYU to finish his studies. He changed his major to political science and graduated with a BA degree. Soon after graduating he volunteered for the draft and joined the U.S. Army. After training he was sent to Okinawa, Japan. While serving he was introduced to Eiko Nakama who was a radio and television announcer. They dated and were married on April 30, 1970 and were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple after moving to Utah.

After obtaining a law degree from the University of Utah in 1973 he was able to work with his father James P. McCune from 1973 to 1983 forming the McCune & McCune Law firm. He joined and created two chapters of the Sertoma International service club both in Provo and Salt Lake City. As an International Attorney he gained much interest in international business and formed a company called Asia Marketing and Consulting Corp. He was able to also bring many exchange students through the Ameristay program that he formed.

He was active in the church and served in many capacities throughout his lifetime. His love of the gospel of Jesus Christ was infectious and his love of writing produced many books including: Testimony, The Blessings of Temple Marriage, Personalities in the Doctrine and Covenants, and a biography on President Gordon B. Hinckley. George developed a love of family history and genealogical work through taking classes in college and through his time working at the Church History Department during Law School. This gave him the desire to research his family history and led him to help form the McCune Family Association which includes all descendants of Matthew McCune (1811-1889) He was active association historian for many years.

He is survived by wife, two sons, and his daughter, Eiko N. McCune, Las Vegas, NV, Dean N. McCune, Camarillo, CA, Ted C. McCune, Salt Lake City, UT, and Chiemi M. McGhie, Henderson, NV; 5 grandchildren. Interment will be in the McCune plot, Nephi City Cemetery.
