Gary Lee Johnson (84) of Sandy Utah, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on December 20th, 2020 of natural causes. Gary was born to James and Sophia (Larsen) Johnson in Riverton, Utah, where he spent his youth on an 80 acre farm.

Gary attended and graduated from Jordan High School where he met and made lifelong friendships with his car club group, the Jesters. As a result, he loved old cars and racing. To this day, the club still meets once a month.

Gary developed a deep and devout love for Brigham Young University while he attended for two years prior to serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Spanish speaking, San Antonio, Texas mission.

Gary met Laura Mae Baxter at a dance at the Avalon Ballroom in 1961, and for him it was love at first sight! They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 10, later that same year, by Mark E Petersen. Gary and Laura recently celebrated 59 years of wedded bliss.

Gary and Laura spent the majority of their married years in Sandy, Utah where they raised their four boys. They instilled a love for family, deep family roots and life long memories.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, and seven of his siblings.

He is survived by his his sweetheart, Laura, his sister, Lois Fails, his brother Leon Johnson, his four boys, Kevin, Scott (Jolene), Brian (Christine) and Darren (Angie) and his 9 grandchildren, Eric, Cameron, Brady, Ethan, Logan, Andrew, Emma, Talon and Shelby. Gary loved each and every member of his family.

Gary thoroughly loved spending time in the mountains camping and fishing with the Sundowner Sam's Group. He took every opportunity he had to travel with the group and his family.

Gary was an avid fan of BYU basketball and football and he loved the Utah Jazz. He would spend hours cheering them on!

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 28, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Goff Mortuary. A viewing will be held on Sunday December 27, 2020 from 5-7 pm at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street, Midvale, Utah and one hour prior to services on Monday. Interment at the Sandy City Cemetery.
