Gary Allen Fillerup

Gary Allen Fillerup, age 78, beloved husband, father, master fixer and jack of all trades, ornery cuss, "preacher," family man, hero, and storyteller, passed away on August 28, two days short of his 79th birthday. We know he is joyfully reunited with his father, who died when Gary was only 13, and his son Allen, who died at age 6. Gary was an amazing survivor: two homes burning down, the premature deaths of loved ones, being shot in the line of duty as a Salt Lake City police officer, and many other hardships and challenges. Through his life he influenced many people with his stalwart principles and dedication to what is right. He could usually see a better way to do things, and wasn't afraid to try.

Gary is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 59 years, and six of his children: Jeanne (Ron) Cushing, Susan (Tom) Dunford, Sandra (Bryon) McGregor, Beth (Dominic Roques) Fillerup, Linda (Ed) Townes, and Jesse (Brenna) Fillerup; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren (with more on the way!). Dad was always happiest when surrounded by family.

Dad, you are our hero and inspiration of what dedication and hard work can do. You have shown us that if we are determined to improve ourselves, we can. We love you and look forward to seeing you again. We are glad we came to your house.

We express our greatest thanks to Melanie, his hospice nurse, for her excellent care during this challenging time. Thank you for helping us make this difficult transition.

Friends and loved ones can pay respects at Goff Mortuary on Tuesday, September 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. (8090 South State). A funeral will be held Wednesday, September 2nd at 11 a.m. at the Murray 29th Ward meetinghouse (6300 South 700 West), where friends can pay respects one hour prior to the service. Interment, Midvale City Cemetery.
