Eric William (Bill) Anderson, 93, of Sandy, Utah, passed away of pneumonia, which developed as a result of natural/age related causes, at Alta View Hospital on January 9th, 2021. He was holding the hands of his loved ones. Bill was born on Sept. 22nd, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only child of Eric H. Anderson and Anna L. Anderson. His father was a Swedish Immigrant, and his mother was a first generation American, being born of Swedish immigrants, as well. Bill spent his entire life in Sandy, Utah. Bill had no desires to move away or search the world for magical places, other than great places to fish. Sandy was "home" and home was where he was happiest. Bill was a master carpenter. As a finish carpenter, there was no one more talented, thoughtful, and intentional in his practice. Carpentry was his art and passion. As an industrial arts teacher at West Jordan Jr. High School, thousands of students got to benefit from the master teacher he was.
Bill was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and appreciated his relationships with ward members, who always reached out to him, recognizing what an amazing human being he was and wanting to glean from his wealth of knowledge of woodworking, fishing, or the interesting stories he shared. Bill had a witty sense of humor that kept us all on our toes. Aside from his family and lifelong friends, Bill's close working relationships with his neighbors, fellow teachers, and fishing buddies were the greatest treasures in his life.
After graduating from Jordan High School, Bill and several of his classmates enlisted in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He was charged with keeping the troops stationed in the Pacific, supplied with equipment and provisions to further the war effort. The sacrifices and contribution of these merchant marines were enormously instrumental to the war effort, as they were the lifeline and pipeline to the U.S. military effort. Bill was stationed on the Marine Cardinal and was proud to serve his country. He was sent home a few months before the war ended because his father was passing away and he was the only child in the family.
After the death of his father, Bill enrolled at the University of Utah, where he met his first wife, Bonnie Houston. Eventually, they moved to Logan, UT to attend Utah State. Bill finished his Bachelor's degree and secured a teaching position in Jordan School District. They, eventually, moved back to Sandy, Utah and, in time, had two children, Kyle and Kerri. Bill signed up with the National Guard and enjoyed his weekends building roads and blazing trails. Many subsequent family excursions allowed him to visit and reminisce over his time in guard and feel the pride in his contributions.
Bill built his dream home in east Sandy around 1969. Shortly afterwards, he and Bonnie divorced. A few years later, Bill met his adoring wife, JoAnn. Bill and JoAnn instantly became a family of 8, as Bill and JoAnn blended their households! The new family enjoyed many magical memories from fishing trips, camping at Bear Lake, and Bryce Canyon visits. Bill and JoAnn shared a love of fishing, family, and beautifying their home and yard. They were true and faithful companions to each other for over 49 years. They would have celebrated their 50thwedding anniversary in April of this year.
Bill is survived by his wife, JoAnn; children, Kyle Anderson, Robin Cripps, , Tim Simon (deceased), Kerri Anderson, Cindy Bilanzich, Teresa DuPaix, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
The Anderson Family would like to thank the medical staff of Alta View Hospital for their extraordinary care and flexibility during Bill's last days. JoAnn and family are grateful for all the meals and flowers sent by friends and ward members.
Due to Covid restrictions, a small viewing will be held at Goff Mortuary on Sat. January 16th at noon with a graveside service at Sandy City Cemetery at 1:00. The graveside service will be recorded and made available to those who loved Bill, on the Goff Mortuary website. CDC guidelines will be followed for both the viewing and graveside service. Masks are mandatory. If you plan on coming and have had ANY symptoms within 5 days prior to, or have been directly exposed to Covid-19 within the 7 days of the service, please honor Bill's loved ones wishes and watch the services online (Goff website).
