Emma Carter

Emma Ockey Carter passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 28, 2017.  She was born June 18, 1925 in Nephi, Utah to Joseph William Ockey and Martha Pearl Jones Ockey. She married Jack Burton Carter on September 8, 1946. Together Jack and Emma had four children: Cathleen, Debbie, Mike and Jan. She also had a nephew, Merrill Shaw, which she claimed to be one of her own. They were blessed with eight grandchildren: DeAnn, Seth, Craig, Daina, Luke, Mikell, Kade and Angie, and eighteen great grandchildren: Chelsie, Carter, Caylee, Kaitlee, Kinnley, Sadie, Lanie, Liberty, Thomas, Ellie, Gage, Kenzie, Hadlee, Mitchell, Macklin, Braylon, Jaxson and Ava. She was expecting her first great-great granddaughter in January.

Emma was raised on her family's farm in Nephi, Utah along with her parents and siblings: Paul, Dora, Donald and Janet. She was very proud and loved growing up on the farm and was always telling stories about the fun they had there. She graduated from Juab High School in 1943, then went on to attend Utah State University in Logan, Utah before moving back to Nephi where she worked and raised her family.

Emma was an extremely hard worker, working until the age of 87 years old. She was a telephone operator, where she saved the life of a man with her devotion and quick action. She retired from NRP after 30 years and continued working for Mosaic. She was so proud to say, "I worked until I was 87."

Emma had a love for life and was extremely proud of her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her kids and grandkids and was always planning their many adventures. Emma was very active and never missed a family event and was always looking forward to the next one. She loved horses, going for rides, telling stories, watching movies and her "Utah Jazz."  She was able to attend her first Jazz game a few years ago where she sat on the 4th row. Emma was very quick witted and always claimed she was sharp as a tack, strong as an ox. Emma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was sealed in the Manti Temple.

Emma is survived by her children, Cathleen, Debbie (Dave), Mike (Donna), Jan, Merrill; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many cousins and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Paul and Donny; sisters, Dora (her best friend) and Janet.

The family would like to thank her special friend Dr. James Rosenbeck.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Nephi 8th Ward, 222 South 100 East, Nephi, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment, Vine Bluff Cemetery.
