May the long time sun shine upon you
All love surround you
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on
Elizabeth (Bette) Jean Poulsen Church passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends October 16, 2017, after a long struggle with complex neurological issues. She was 72 years old. Bette was preceded in death by her parents, Jean Woolley Poulsen and Clarence Merrill Poulsen, her sister in law, Sharon Barnes, and brother Fred Barnes. She is survived by her two children, Erika Elizabeth (Lorelei Rutledge) and Devan Aloysius (Sara Gonzales), brother, James Stephen Barnes (Bunny), nieces Diane Barnes, Barbara Barnes (Eric Chesmar), Heather Barnes, and nephew Ralf Barnes (Suzy Stone-Barnes) and their families, along with the many lives she impacted. This kind and trusting soul had a special gift connecting with children, not only as devoted mother to Erika and Devan but also in her work as a swimming/diaper gym instructor at the YWCA and the many positions she held in the Salt Lake City School district throughout her life. Bette was mentored by two inspiring educators, Gini Doelle (YWCA) and Janet Mitchell Williams, (SL Schools). Bette also loved animals and the arts, including calligraphy, ceramics, cooking, gardening, tap dancing, and ice skating. Smile, laugh, and hold those you love close. Next time you eat an avocado nurture the pit into a little plant, add some sprouts to your sandwich, and be an adventurous eater. Care for animals, sing silly songs, and embrace your most individual and creative wardrobe. The family would like to thank her attending medical support, especially Dr. Diana Banks, the staff at Millcreek Home Health and Hospice, and Highland Care Center, and special caregivers: Mariana Vargas and her family who surrounded "Grandma Bette" with love and care, Clarence Bynum and her family who encouraged her energy and creativity, and Robynn Saracino who kept Bette social and mobile. A celebration of Bette's life will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Columbus Center (2531 S. 400 E., South Salt Lake, UT) from 1-4 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made in her name to the YWCA.
