Elaine George Shaw, age 95, passed away peacefully in her son's home in South Jordan on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Elaine was born August 26, 1919 in Montpelier, Idaho to Udell George and Mary Sophia (Polly) Thompson George. She was the eldest of seven children. She grew up in Montpelier, Salt Lake City, Copperfield, and Sandy, attending Bingham High school and graduating from Jordan High School in 1935.
Elaine married her sweetheart Grant Shaw on his birthday, March 29, 1940. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple April 28, 1944. Grant and Elaine lived in the Store Apartments in Bingham Canyon until 1941, when they moved to Midvale, where they resided for approximately 68 years. Shortly after Grant passed away, Elaine moved to South Jordan to live with her son Brent and his family. Together Elaine and Grant raised three children: Brent, Nadine and Keith. They have 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren.
Elaine was a wonderful stay-at-home mother. She loved planting flowers in her yard. She canned fruits from her garden and fruit trees. She loved children and was a 4H leader for Nadine and her friends, teaching them to sew, and having fun taking them camping. Elaine was an excellent cook. As her children got older, she started working as a school lunch worker at Midvale Elementary School and later at Midvale Junior High School. Elaine was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different callings in the Primary and Relief Society. As she continued growing flowers she began making beautiful flower arrangements. With some encouragement from her family, she began entering arrangements in the county and state fairs, always winning blue ribbons and special awards. Once the word got out, she was asked to do special arrangements for Relief Society, ward and other events. She also won community awards for her beautiful yard. Elaine was a camping trooper. She and Grant enjoyed camping each year with a group that consisted of seven couples and their families. Elaine enjoyed traveling with Grant on several trips around the country and abroad, after their children were raised. Elaine and Grant served for four years in the baptistery at the Jordan River Temple and for 15 years participating in weekly sealing sessions at the temple.
Elaine is survived by her son, W. Brent Shaw (Tina) of South Jordan; daughter, Nadine (Luis) Lopez of West Jordan; 13 grandchildren: Brian, Stephen, Jonia, Michael, Matt, Scott, Brett, Peter, Marilyn, Warren, Katie, Amy and Nathan; 25 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren; sisters, Genevieve Eliason and Marian Welch; and brother, Richard (Sandra) George. The family wishes to thank Heartwood Home Health and Hospice for their loving help and support during the final months of Elaine's life.
