Douglas Jay Phillips, 83, passed away on November 25, 2016. Doug was born in Duchesne, Utah to Russell Nathan Phillips and Joyce Casper Phillips. He grew up on the family farm in Roosevelt, Utah before leaving to serve an LDS mission in Mexico. Doug graduated from the University of Utah in business then accepted a position with JC Penney's in Montpelier, ID. He later worked for Penney's in Twin Falls, Idaho and as a store manager in Colfax, Washington.
In 1972, he purchased a department store in Deer Park, Washington and was a self-employed merchant for the rest of his career. He was active in the communities where he worked as a chamber of commerce president, school board member, and city councilman. Doug also served in many church callings. He was a ward missionary, branch president, and bishop but took the most pride in being a faithful home teacher.
Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Elaine Abbott. He is also survived by five children: Brad, Cliff, David, Lorne, and Michelle, as well as 21 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 3, at 12 noon at the Midvale 1st Ward, 308 West 7500 South, with a viewing Saturday at the church from 10:30-11:45 a.m. Interment, West Jordan City Cemetery.
