Dorothy Putnam Nelson

Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed from this life on Thursday, September 8, 2022, in Sandy, Utah.

Dorothy was born on 7/27/27, in Bountiful, Utah, to Breta Lee and Joseph Owen Putnam. She was the second of six children and the only girl. It is no wonder she was always a “daddy’s girl!” Dorothy spent her early years in Bountiful, blessed to spend many days on the farms of extended family. She graduated from Davis High School in 1945.

On January 14, 1948, Dorothy married her best friend Ralph Conrad Nelson. Together, they established a wonderful family and home. They lived in Salt Lake for a short time, but moved to Sandy shortly after the birth of their first son, Steven. Dorothy and Ralph lived with Ralph’s mother, Edith, for a time while they built their home next door. This house was the place Dorothy called home for the next 70 years. Dorothy devoted herself to her family, raising four children and being a loving wife.
She also found time to teach primary, lead a cub scout den, sew, quilt and raise a wonderful garden, and preserve the food therefrom.

Family and friends were always important to Dorothy. Despite the teasing and tormenting received as the only girl child, she dearly loved her brothers. She enjoyed family gatherings where they camped together or gathered at home to play card games. Family always included Dorothy’s brothers, Ralph’s sister Grace, and their spouses and children, the Soda Pop Club (Ralph’s high school friends), and other wonderful friends she and Ralph were honored to know. Dorothy also met with her eight best friends from High School every month for many years. Her favorite vacations were spent with these loved ones she called family.

After her youngest, Patti, was a little older, Dorothy went to work as a secretary for the law firm of Nolan Olsen and later worked as a secretary for Jordan School District, where she spent many wonderful years.

Dorothy could never be idle. After retirement, she continued to keep herself busy by serving on many boards, including Jordan Credit Union and The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Well into her eighties, she volunteered as a docent at the Sandy Museum, as well as acting as their treasurer. Even into her last months, she continued to serve by crocheting baby blankets for Primary Children’s Hospital, something she had done for many years.

Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have always been her greatest joy. Dorothy loved to hold a young baby, including just two months ago at her 95th birthday party. She greatly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they LOVED her!

Dorothy lived many, many years longer than she thought she would, and perhaps many more than she wanted to, but those of us who remain are grateful for those many years and memories that she blessed us with. Dorothy is survived by her four children Steven (Shirley), Susan (Max), Keith (Ann), and Patricia. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by Ralph, her beloved husband of 65 years, her sister-in-law Grace Grohs (Oscar), and her five brothers Jack (Geneve and DeOna), Dale (Betty), Wayne (Jane), Marvin (Patsy), and Paul (Merlene).
