Donald Rodney Schain

DONALD RODNEY SCHAIN February 26, 1941 December 26, 2015 Donald was born in New York City to Harry Rodney Schain and Ruth Elizabeth Aldridge Schain. He was raised in Deal, New Jersey. Donald attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated in 1963 with Honors in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. To this day, Don is a fanatical Tar Heel fan, especially basketball. Film was Dons passion, and after graduating and working for Walter Reed Theatres in distribution, he left to write and direct several films including his favorite, A Place Called Today. Don moved to Los Angeles in 1971, and produced several films. In 1991, at the urging of David Anderson, Don relocated to Salt Lake City to produce films for Leucadia Film Corp, for whom he produced 10 films. At Leucadia, Don met his wife, Shauna Miller Schain. They have been together for almost 25 years. Since Leucadia, Don has produced over 40 films in Utah for Disney, Showtime, Columbia Tri-Star, and many independents. His passion for filmmaking extended to everyone he worked with. He especially loved his crews, and was deeply loyal to them. So many crew members were brought up the ranks through his mentorship. Many have expressed that Don was more than a boss, he was a friend, father figure and mentor. Don is survived by his wife Shauna, Sisters Joan Nugent, Donna Schain and Denise Schain, Brother in Law William Spotnitz, Daughter Candi Root, Nephew Russell Spotnitz, and grandchildren Jacob, Nicoli and Lydia Solomon. A service will be held for Don on Friday, January 8th at 3:00pm at Congregation Kol Ami: 2425 East Heritage Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, January 9th from 5-8:00pm at the Alta Club, 100 South Temple, Salt Lake City, 84111. Dons passing is truly egregious, and we will always love and miss him.
