Demetra Thimakis

Our beloved Mother, Yiayia, Mega-Yiayia, Aunt and Friend, passed away on July 18, 2016. Demetra was born in Chania, Crete, Greece on March 25, 1922 to Yianni and Anna Kastsoulakis Makridakis. She was the youngest of 10 children. She immigrated to the United States via an agreement to an arranged marriage to John Thimakis. John and Demetra were married for 45 years until his passing in 1995. Demetra was a strong-willed matriarch who ruled her family with a koutala in hand. She enjoyed visitors, baking koulourakia, reading the newspaper, playing cards, making dolmathes at Greek Festival and drinking percolated Folgers coffee.

Survivors include her son, Tony (Judy); two daughters, Anna Gibson (Larry), Marika Newton (Douglas-deceased); six grandchildren, five great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and her nine siblings.

May her memory be eternal.
