David Lloyd Nelson

David Lloyd Nelson, 61 years old, passed away on July 4, 2024, from natural causes. He was born August 23, 1962, in Murray, Utah to Wayne and Eileen Nelson and had a younger brother James. David was born with both physical and cognitive challenges which shaped his life and the levels of patience, long suffering, courage, and empathy he achieved. People befriended him wherever he went, and they became trusted sources of strength and inclusion throughout his life.

His parents settled in Sandy, Utah where David went to East Sandy Elementary. There he would meet his life-long friend, Kevin Astle, who was with him and provided comfort just before his passing. David graduated from Jordan High School, class of 1980, and served on many Beetdiggers reunion committees. He looked forward to reconnecting with fellow alumni and reminiscing about the “good ‘ole days.”

David’s mother loved the theater and imparted that love to both her sons who grew up acting in school and community plays. David graduated from Southern Utah University with a bachelor’s degree in Theater and continued to act and enjoy the theater throughout his life. He loved the famous Broadway musicals and would dress up as the Phantom of the Opera on most Halloweens. Another favorite was playing Santa Claus, at the annual ward Christmas parties, where David donned his own Santa suit to entertain kids and adults alike.

David served an LDS mission to the Washington Spokane Mission. He loved mission life and sharing the gospel with others; something he continued to do using technology until his passing. While on his mission he became an “adopted son” to Wayne and Ellen Warnick who were a great support throughout his life, especially during the past eight years. They always remembered him at holidays and birthdays with cards, presents, and lots of love. They truly cared about him and his wellbeing. Audra Kasparian was another good friend who was always there to support him and offer her love and friendship.

David worked at Franklin Covey and then for the Marriott Corporation in reservations. Employees were invited to tour new properties, which he did on occasion especially if they were close to a Disney resort. He was Disney’s biggest fan and adored the beloved characters amassing an enviable DVD collection of the classics and series greats. A highlight for David was being able to attend Salt Lake City’s Comic Con event where he met Aquaman, Jason Mamoa, Chewbacca, and other larger-than-life characters.

David was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of the Plan of Salvation. He served in Sunday School and Ward Mission callings and was always willing to do whatever was asked of him. In 2016, David experienced a series of strokes that slowly took away his mobility. The patience that he developed throughout his lifetime was put on final display as he became confined to a hospital bed. He endured this time well, making friends with staff and fellow roommates, and keeping his dry sense of humor. His family is grateful to the dedicated professionals and their care during this time.

David is survived by his brother Jim and sister-in-law Traci, his nephew Xander and niece Rory, and many friends and loved ones. A service will be held on Saturday, July 27, at 11:00 AM at the Winder 7th/13th Ward, Winder West Stake, 4350 South 1100 East, Millcreek, Utah. Interment: Sandy City Cemetery, 700 East 9000 South.
