Daniel C. McNair passed away on August 23, 2023 at home in the arms of the love of his life, Bonnie Lefler McNair. As his family mourns this loss, the family members who predeceased him are celebrating the gift we sent to them. Dan lived a full life and was dearly loved.
Dan was born December 19, 1938, graduated from Granite High School and attended various community colleges to further his career as a police officer. Dan worked for the Salt Lake City Police Department for 23 years. During his years on the police force he worked as a K9 officer with his dog Sasha, in the Detective Division, and was lead accident investigation officer. Dan was a people person and had the “gift of gab.” Everyone loved his stories.
Dan joined the National Guard in 1961 and was activated into the army because of the Berlin Crisis. He was sharpshooter in the army.
Dan spent his life working in multiple jobs and found joy in his work. The most remarkable was the 43 years he spent teaching traffic school. Hardly a day passed without him meeting someone on the street who was sure they knew him but couldn’t quite figure out where or how. Dan would get a smile on his face and say “have you been in traffic school lately?” The reply was always “oh, yeah, that’s what it was!”
Dan was known for his “yummy” chocolate chip cookies. I can still hear the chant “Dan, Dan, the cookie man.”
Dan had a morning ritual of reading the paper from cover to cover while drinking his coffee and surrounded by his three dogs that adored him – Abby, Bailee, and Red.
His love of cars carried through his life. In fact, he saved and restored his 1968 Super Sport 396 Camaro that he bought new (Clean one owner!) His last ride in the Camaro will be to the cemetery. I’m sure he will be looking down with a grin on his face.
Dan loved fishing, watching the Jazz play and attending Ute Football, and Red Rocks gymnastics.
Dan was preceded in death by his father Daniel McNair, his mother Ruth Rich McNair and his mother-in-law Karma Lefler. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Lefler McNair, brother James A. (Sharon) McNair, sister Kathy Burton, sister Susan (Jerry) Kartchner, father-in-law Bill Lefler, brother-in-law Steve (Kathy) Lefler, sister-in-law Jill (Russ) Iverson, brother-in-law Brad Lefler, 4 children and many nieces and nephews who adored him.
A graveside service will be held at the Midway City Cemetery, 600 West 500 South, Midway, Utah, on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Casual dress (Dan would want it that way)! There will be a celebration of life on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Anderson & Goff Mortuary from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Please bring pictures and memories.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in his name to the Humane Society of Utah or the American Heart Association.
