Obituary
Chester William “Chet” Sanders (1935-2018) passed away unexpectedly due to complications following orthopedic surgery on Jan. 23, 2018. He was 82 years old. A good man, father, husband, and is greatly missed by his family who love him.
Chet was born on February 4, 1935 to Charles Alma Sanders and Gladys Ione (Brown) Sanders in American Falls, Idaho. He was the youngest of nine children and the only one of them to have been born in a hospital. His parents were some of the original homesteaders in the area of Idaho then known as “Idahome” (near present day Malta, ID). During the Great Depression his family were caused to move to Yale and then Coldwater Camp (on the Snake River) before ultimately settling in Rupert, ID. His father passed away when he was 4-years-old, an event that contained lasting consequences and lingering hardships for the family. Chet was very proud of his Idaho roots and lightheartedly claimed to still only be passing through Utah.
Chet enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Ord in California. He later joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve before ending his service in 1964. He was a very patriotic American and always proudly flew his country’s flag at his home. He was extremely proud of his two older brothers who served our country in WWII.
In his younger years Chet became a Printer’s Apprentice, and worked for several publications in Idaho, Utah, and California. He attended Brigham Young University and earned a Baccalaureate degree. He later earned a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stout. He worked over 30 years for the State of Utah (Office of Education, Division of Rehabilitation Services) and later retired. He was also an educator for a short period of time before starting work at the State.
Chet loved to travel and had a penchant for finding well off-the-beaten-path places of interest, often in extremely remote locations. In his younger years he enjoyed his horses, off-road motorcycles, and 4-wheel drive vehicles, mostly since they allowed him to range far and wide. He loved to hunt, fish, explore, and enjoy the beauty this earth has to offer. He had a genuine ability to see beauty where others did not.
Chet loved his hobby of being a gentleman farmer. He was a talented gardener and always had animals to care for, especially birds. On various occasions he raised ducks, pheasants, chickens, turkeys, and other varieties of game birds. Chet very often maintained structures and feeding locations on his property to attract wild bird species. He was also a gifted wood-worker and created several works of art.
Chet developed an interest in aviation and earned a pilot’s license. He flew all around the western U.S. and often shared fond memories of his experiences with his family. He later gave up his hobby in the interest of raising a family.
Chet married Jacqueline (Jackie) Barawidan in 1993 and in doing so found his soul mate. They were inseparable until the end, having travelled extensively together.
Chet was an intensely human, independent, passionate, God-fearing man who lived his life his way. He earned that privilege. We are proud to call him our father.
Chet is survived by his wife Jacqueline, sister Bessie Sanders Vyhnal, daughter Taresa Fine (Kenny), son Randy Sanders (Cherie), son Drew Sanders (Angela), son Ira Sanders (Pauline), son Wade Sanders (Brenda), daughter Nanette Sanders Aydelotte (Mike), 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
