Charles Grant Hurst

Our beloved husband, father, Grandpa Grant and Papa, Charles Grant Hurst, passed away surrounded by his family on December 26, 2017, after suffering a heart attack on Christmas Eve. He peacefully closed this earthly chapter of life, well-lived and well-loved.

Grant was born on October 26, 1940, the oldest of 5 children, to Fred Eugene and Fayetta Marie Casper Hurst. He lived his entire life in Sandy, affectionately earning the nickname, "Mr. Sandy City," from his family. He attended Sandy Elementary, Sandy Junior High, Jordan High, the University of Utah, and graduated from the School for Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a major in Operations. On April 2, 1966, he married the love of his life, Lucille Fowler in Las Vegas. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Happily married for nearly 52 years, they have three children, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren who are his greatest treasures.

Grant loved people and gathered friends everywhere he went. An avid participant in community events and civic service, Grant enjoyed being involved in musical theater, serving on the Sandy City Council, chairing the Sandy July 4th Committee, and announcing the Sandy July 4th Parade. He was a founding member of the Sandy Arts Council and served in numerous civic capacities, including the State School Board, the Sandy Lions Club, Salt Lake Metro Water Conservancy Board, and the Jordan Education Foundation. Grant received the Noal Bateman Service Award, volunteered as a reading tutor at Sandy Elementary and was an active counselor for the citizenship, personal management and several other merit badges.

Music was always an important part of Grant's life. He played saxophone starting as a teenager, and played in the University of Utah Marching Band, the Tim Bate Orchestra, the Reunion Jazz Band, and most recently played with and served as President of the Riverton Jazz Band. His musical influence reached far and wide, and he supported and inspired many of his grandchildren to develop musical talents. Grant's beautiful tenor voice blessed many. He loved singing Messiah, organizing and participating with the American West Chorus, ward and stake choirs, and his trademark impression of Louis Armstrong. As an adult, he learned to play guitar and mandolin, and played with the Utah Old Time Fiddlers.

As a banker, Grant had a successful career working for Valley Bank and Trust, Valley National Bank, Bank One and Zions Bank. He entered the profession as a file clerk in 1961. His hard work and strong commitment to the bank resulted in a climb up the company ladder. He worked as a bookkeeper, loan officer, and Branch Operations Manager before becoming a Senior Vice President in 1982. Grant cherished his church callings as Sunday school teacher, choir director, bishop and high councilor. He loved serving as a missionary with Lucille in the Canada, Montreal Mission, and continued his missionary service with assignments in the LDS Church Finance Department and again with Lucille in the Temple Department.

Grant is survived by his wife, Lucille; children: Heidi Richards, Draper, UT; Jason (Sara), Los Altos, CA; and Jeff (Kim) Lehi, UT; grandchildren: Maddie (Jordan) Fratto, Sterling (Vicky) Richards, Olivia (Evan) Hogge, Hayley Richards; Abigail, Sophia, Jack and Sam Hurst; Kennedy, Will, Isaac and Zoe Hurst; great-grandchildren Ellie, Hank, and Lucy Fratto.

Funeral services will be held at the Cottonwood Creek Stake Center, 1535 E. Creek Road, on Tuesday, January 2nd at noon with interment following at Sandy City Cemetery. Viewings will be held at the same location on Monday, January 1st from 6-8 PM and from 10-11:45 AM on Tuesday prior to the service.

We will be forever grateful for Grant's influence and love in our lives. He was happiest with his family around him, proudest of his children and grandchildren, and most content with a horn in his hands and as a champion, friend and confidant to all who knew him.
