Betty Mae Costello

April 9, 1941 — August 19, 2017

Betty Mae Costello

Our beautiful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully in her home and surrounded by family on August 19, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.  Betty Mae Costello was born April 9, 1941 in Laramie, Wyoming to Thomas and Agnes Reed.  After serving an LDS mission in the West Central States Mission, she attended Brigham Young University. She married her sweetheart, Mark Costello, in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1972. He preceded her in death in 1981.  She is also preceded in death by her sister Phyllis Gortler, and her parents Thomas and Agnes Reed.

As a young widow, she raised her three daughters alone.  She taught them to be independent and strong.  She leaves them, Andrea Costello; Kathy (Ken) Richins; Alicia (Mike) Button along with her five grandchildren Zach (Savannah), Jaxson, Thomas, Katelyn, and Stockton behind.  She also leaves behind her brother Billy, whom she admires and adores, many nieces and nephews, and her precious, naughty and loyal cat, Kiki.

Betty lived an adventurous life as a youngster and encouraged her daughters to pursue their dreams wherever they would take them- even if it meant sacrificing money and worry so they could fly for the Air Force, go to College in New York or drive a Taxicab in Phoenix, AZ.  She loved animals.  She enjoyed riding her two horses while she was young and always let her girls bring home various creatures.

She moved to California to patent drilling equipment for her father and lived in Cody, Wyoming as well. She had many interesting jobs; she worked for the University of Utah Medical Center, the LDS Church, the US Post office as well as the Cathedral of the Madeline. She dedicated her life to serving others. She was a great friend to all those she met.  She loves her grandchildren and is so proud of them.  They loved having "Grandma sleepovers" and doing fun things with her.  Her "happy place" was deep sea fishing in the Pacific Ocean.  She was so happy she got to share that with her grand kids and great friends.  Her thoughtfulness was matched only by her wonderful sense of humor.

The girls would like to thank all her wonderful friends and family who came to spend time with her in her last few weeks.  They would also like to thank Dr. Saundra Buys and the amazing team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute; Dr. Crum and Trey from The Moran Eye Center; Janice, Janine, and Bert from iCare Home Health & Hospice for beautifully caring for our mom and ensuring her comfort and dignity.

A viewing will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Goff Mortuary located at 8090 S. State Street, Midvale, Utah 84047.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm at the Bennion Stake Center located at 6250 South 2200 West, Taylorsville, UT with a viewing from 10:00-10:45 am.
