Beth Whimpey

Beth (Leavitt) Whimpey, age 81, of Nephi, Utah, passed away on Saturday, June 13th, 2020. She was born June 14th, 1938 to Leonard and Margaret Leavitt in Ogden, Utah. She spent most of her life in Utah, except for her time in Washington D.C. - where she met her sweetheart and husband of 57 years, Jim Whimpey. They were married in the Logan Temple March 27, 1958, and shortly after moved to Ogden. Beth was wonderfully creative and shared her talents in numerous ways. She not only sang, played flute, and painted, she also acted (in every single play her school put on), directed, read books aloud (with pantomimes), danced tap, ballet, and modern (both for school and church programs), sewed (even winning a contest her junior year with a long green wool coat), and mastered counted cross-stitch, knitting, and crocheting - which also led her to sew and make all of her children's clothes (and clothes for others). Yet, still, her most remembered creative talents will be her extraordinary cake decorating ability, her homemade candy, and her ceramic work. Beth not only decorated cakes for a time at the local grocery store bakery, but for friends, family, and friends of friends - for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and everyday celebrations. Those lucky enough to know her light were usually the ones lucky enough to receive a plate of her intricate, delicious, hand-made and hand-dipped chocolates and candies at Christmas, as well as hand-made cards for all of their celebrations. Her ceramics work led her to open and operate her own shop in Nephi for a time, but long after it closed, she continued to meticulously paint beautiful figurines in her home. Her craft room was always stacked with projects. When not deep in paint, paper, or string, Beth was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served 4 ½ years as an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple, an 18-month mission with her husband in the Florida Tampa Mission, and served 5 ½ years as a service missionary as a manager of the Nephi Home Storage. Beth collected Precious Moments, both as her classic figurines and in her life - spending time camping, traveling, playing games, and with her beloved family. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Dale, and husband Jim. She is survived by her children - Bert (Becky) Whimpey, Blaine Whimpey, Jill (Kerry) Gee, Richard (Kathy) Whimpey - and her 21 grandkids and 14 great grandchildren.

A family funeral will be held Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Nephi 4th/5th Ward (345 East 500 North) with a public viewing Wednesday, June 17, 2020 from 6-8 pm at Anderson Funeral Home (94 West 300 North, Nephi, Utah). Interment will be at Vine Bluff Cemetery Nephi, Utah.
