Bertha Gertrude Manriquez Setterberg Rand departed this world, January 18th, 2017. She was a 96 years young "small but mighty" left handed beauty.
Bertha was born November 20th, 1920 in El Rosario, Sinaloa Mexico. She immigrated to Southern California with her family when she was young. She had 11 siblings. She told stories about how she was responsible to make homemade tortillas every day for her family. This ability to care for others stayed with her.
Bertha was a dancer for the USO during WWII; where she met Richard Setterberg. He swept her off of her feet (all-be-it very small feet!). They married and eventually moved to Utah after his tour of Duty. They built their home in Sandy City and had 3 children. Her husband suddenly passed in midlife; she was devastated but many years later married her second husband Alan V. Rand.
Bertha was instrumental in opening Jordan Valley School in1975. She was a Journalist and "Secretary" for the Midvale Sentinel paper for 26 years. She later became Department Secretary for the American Legion Auxiliary, Chairman of the Memorial of Sandy City Cemetery and Director of the Sandy City museum. She was the 1st female recipient of the Noel Bateman Longtime Service Award, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Sandy Unit 77 for 71 years, was a V.I.M and was also a partner of 8-8-40. She had many service awards and was also a member of many volunteer organizations. She gave her heart and soul to each project. She was also a life-long Democrat.
Bertha was a very talented artist; creating many lovely oil paintings. She also enjoyed golfing with her dearest friends Pat, Lyle, Jackie and Tom. She was very proud of her "left handed" swing. She was a gifted seamstress, enjoyed gardening and loved to cook. You never left her home hungry.
Bertha was devoted to her Christian beliefs and her Catholic faith.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard A.Setterberg and Alan V. Rand, daughter Laura M. Christensen, great -grandson Truman R. Clawson. Survived by daughter Karen Lucero (Gil), son Allan Setterberg (Ellen), 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, her sister Esther Manriquez, and brother Ruben Manriquez.
We would like to extend our most sincere appreciation to 5 Star Home of Sandy; previously known as Country Care Homes for taking such exceptional care of Bertha.
