Barry Lee Hoopes

Barry Lee Hoopes, 65, passed away in Casper, WY on December 27, 2016 while visiting his daughter's family for Christmas. He was born May 7, 1951 to Lowell John and Joan Treloar Hoopes in Afton, WY. As the oldest of four children, he was always looked up to by his siblings. Growing up, he lived in Huntington Beach, California, Hooper, UT and spent most of his youth in Star Valley, WY. He graduated from Star Valley high school in 1969 and went on to serve a mission in the France/Switzerland mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. While there, he developed a great love for his Savior and a passion for service. He loved to teach others about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Dad served in various capacities in the church including bishop, high councilman, primary worker (where he tormented many annoying children), ward mission leader, and faithfully fulfilled his calling even taking care of the ward bulletin throughout his battle with cancer including his last Christmas service two days ago. After his mission, he visited his college bound sister, and met her roommate, his eternal companion, Judy Kay Smith. She forgave him a horrible first date and they were married and sealed in the Logan, UT temple on February 7, 1973. Together they brought six FANTASTIC children into this world. Barry worked throughout his life in insurance and financial planning being honest with his dealings even if it wasn't to his benefit. He enjoyed genealogy, camping, going to the mountains to get firewood, photography, skiing, reading, hunting, and politics (He was grateful that Hillary wasn't elected but didn't want to stick around to see what Donny T. will do). Most of all, he loved studying the scriptures, spending time with his family, and found great joy in the miracle of life as he watched his grandchildren grow. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and his six children, BJ (Heather Gardiner) of Blackfoot,ID JanaKay (Cody Hollist) of Lincoln, NE, JamiLee (Jack Hardy) of Casper, WY, Buzz (Carime Clark) of Meridian, ID, Barrett of Pocatello, ID, Brandt of Vancouver, BC. and 23 grandchildren with 2 more on the way. He is also survived by his 3 siblings, Janaan (Darrel) Haskell of Pocatello, ID, Dan (Leanne) Hoopes and Julie (Bill) Nield of St. George, UT. He is preceded in death by his parents: Joan Treloar Stewart and Lowell John Hoopes, and his father-in-law Wayne Morgan Smith. A viewing will be held at the LDS church building at 2140 Satterfield Dr. in Pocatello, ID on Friday, December 30, 2016 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held the next morning at 10:30 am, with a one hour viewing prior. We want to thank the Dalton-Hoopes funeral home for caring for our father after his passing; specifically his cousin, Gene. Lastly, Dad's favorite scripture is from the Book of Mormon in Ether 12:27. Amongst other miracles surrounding his death, was that he died on 12/27. It is fitting to post that scripture here: "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong into them."
