Barbara Ruth Mumford Ballard, age 93, passed away Sunday evening surrounded by her beloved family. She was born on March 7th, 1927 in Murray, Utah to Victor and Catherine Mumford. She was the youngest of 8 children and doted on by her parents and brothers Wayne, Max, Lyle, Frank, Ferris, and Gideon. Her sister, Blanche, died before Barbara was born.
Barbara was a loving matriarch to her family, helping her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren navigate life's challenges with grace, compassion, and unconditional love.
In her youth, Barbara attended Jordan High and became an accomplished violinist in the school's orchestra. There she also met the love of her life, Melvin Henriod Ballard. They dated through high school and married while Mel was on leave during WWII. They celebrated 72 years together.
In her adult life, Barbara achieved great success in many endeavors. She was an accomplished seamstress and candy maker. Barbara dedicated countless hours serving the women, youth, and children in her wards. She was a bookkeeper for M&M Meats and ran a family construction business with Mel. Barbara was an avid reader who loved history.
Barbara loved adventure and traveled throughout most of her life. She found beauty in the Arizona desert, took weekend trips to Logan, St. George, and Capitol Reef, and visited beaches on both coasts.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Mel, her siblings, and parents. She is survived by her children Mark Ballard, Don Ballard (Janet), Rebecca Rolf (Scott), and Greg Ballard (Debbie). She also had 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
We appreciate the careful love and attention from Rachel Kimball and Lori Feld during the last years of Barbara's life.
