With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Arnie passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Arnie was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 28, 1941 to Arnold James Butterfield and Evaline Belle Peterson. He grew up in Midvale, Utah with his two sisters, Linda and Mary Anne, and graduated from Jordan High School in 1959.
As a young 17-year-old, Arnie joined the U.S. Army Reserves and fulfilled his 4-year active-duty commitment as a reserve. He served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Norwegian Mission for 2 ½ years from September 1960 to March 1963.
Following his mission, Arnie started his career at Advanced Engineering and Drafting Co. as a draftsman. Later in his career, he was self-employed as a structural steel detailer and co-owner, with Floyd Evans, of Ensign Detailing and Drafting. He continued working at home until he officially retired December 2019 at the age of 78.
Arnie and Marianne Jorgensen were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on July 17, 1964. They were just shy of their 60th anniversary. They lived in Midvale, Utah where they raised their eight children until they moved to South Jordan, Utah, in April of 1991, where he resided until his passing.
Arnie loved his Savior Jesus Christ and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings throughout his life, including: Stake Presidency, Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader, Elders Quorum President, High Councilor, Ward and Stake Clerk and Executive Secretaries. He was very detail oriented and excelled at his various administrative and organizational responsibilities. Arnie was also a beloved Gospel Doctrine teacher and a faithful Home Teacher and ministering brother. He never said no to a calling and was willing to serve in any capacity asked of him. He taught his family the importance of service through his example and teaching. At the time of his death, he was still actively serving in his ward as the Sacrament Meeting Prayer Coordinator. He considered it a privilege to serve with so many great men in his leadership responsibilities.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Ivan and Mary Jorgensen, and brothers-in-law Stan Warnick and Richard Jorgensen.
Arnie is survived by his sisters, Linda Warnick and Mary Anne Butterfield; his wife Marianne; his children Derek (Jolyn), Jeanine (Travis) Mecham, Pamela (John) Gassman, Valerie Butterfield, Natalie (Steve) Veach, Nathan (Cherie), Camille (Ryan) Millward, Tricia (Derek) Martindale; 30 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held in his honor on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the South Jordan 5th Ward church building located at 2550 West 9800 South, South Jordan, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, with a viewing one hour prior from 10:00 am – 10:45 am.
