Amy Caroline Stuart

Amy Caroline Hegle Stuart passed peacefully in her sleep early February 23, 2018.

Born in Lisbon, North Dakota on April 28, 1928 to Konrad Hegle and Theckla Lilla Hegle, she weighed only 4 pounds and was not expected to live. She, however, possessed a brand of strength that stood her well all her life. The youngest of eight children, she had five half-brothers, two half-sisters.

A good student and hard worker, she completed high school in three years at Sheyenne River Academy, as well as serving as the school superintendent's secretary. Following graduation, she returned as both secretary and typing teacher (teaching former classmates!) the following year. During the summer between graduation as senior and becoming teacher, she worked at the Seventh-day Adventist Conference office in Jamestown, North Dakota.

She spent the next summer working in the business office and bookstore at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, quickly becoming co-manager of the bookstore with her dormitory roommate. Shortly before Amy's freshman year ended, the President and treasurer of the Missouri Conference Office of Seventh-day Adventists came into the bookstore and offered her a secretarial position for him. She accepted.

Moving to Kansas City, Missouri to take up her new duties, she also began playing the piano for the church choir. Here is where she met Allan Stuart, a bass singer. They married on February 14, 1948. Over the next few years, three children were born to them. Amy was a wonderful mother; she loved her children.

Amy's topnotch secretarial skills landed her great jobs, even to working for four Lieutenant Colonels at the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, and, later, as secretary to the Underwriters at the Workmen's Compensation Bureau.

A devoted Seventh-day Adventist and dedicated to service for her beloved Lord, she used her organ and piano skills to accompany church choirs and play for church services for the majority of her life. She also served as treasurer for her beloved churches in Bismarck, North Dakota and later in West Valley City, Utah.

Her favorite pastimes were doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, collecting recipes, cooking, inviting family and friends (old and new) over for meals (she was a wonderful cook and gracious hostess). She loved people, she was a gentle nurturer....sweet and kind. If she knew you, your name went on her prayer list which was several pages long. Each morning before breakfast, she would pray over each name individually. If she knew of particular concerns anyone was having, those were prayed about too. It is no wonder that all who knew her loved her. She was passionate about Christian education, putting her own children through church school as well as contributing for other students who lacked sufficient funding.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents, five half-brothers (Ellis Massee, George Massee, Donald Massee, Hugh Massee, and Clyde Massee), two half-sisters (Dorothy Nelson Orosco and Shirley Cleveland Adams), her husband Allan, and her stillborn baby boy Roger. Survivors are her children: Bob (Eileen) Stuart, Pam (Calvin) Mertz, and Dave (Carla) Stuart, 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Amy has now gone to sleep for the last time and is resting in Jesus, awaiting resurrection on that great and glad morning when the dead in Christ will rise. Her family and friends deeply miss her and are so grateful for the hope of being reunited with her when Jesus returns to claim His faithful children.

A simple graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 28, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the West Jordan Church. Details will be forthcoming.
