Alice Gorringe

Alice Pauline Hopkins Gorringe passed away on February 12, 2019 at the home of her daughter Susan Smith. Alice was born on June 29, 1931 to David Matthew Hopkins and Pauline Catherine Lehman Hopkins at their home in Prairie Farms, Wisconsin. She was the fifth child of seven children. The family later moved to Allison Park, PA. Alice was active in high school sports and lettered in basketball. Befriended by the Hatch family, at age eight she with most of her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Later, as a young woman, she moved to Salt Lake City where she met and married Howard Ted Gorringe on June 12, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Alice and Ted were the parents of three girls. They made their home in Midvale, Utah. Alice was active in her Ward where she served in many various callings. Of note, she served for forty years as the Ward organist until health issues made it difficult for her to fulfill her calling. Alice and Ted, with their young daughters, answered a call to serve a building mission to Japan in 1963. She showed great faith and devotion to her Savior, and a great desire to live the commandments and keep her covenants.

Alice also worked for many years at Valley Drug in Midvale and later as a secretary at Intermountain Health Care. Ted worked for United Airlines, which afforded them the opportunity to travel. She actually got tired of flying to Hawaii. Alice loved to garden, and her yard and garden was always planted with beautiful flowers. She was a skilled seamstress and sewed clothes for her daughters and their dolls. She was a meticulous housekeeper and a wonderful cook. She treated her family to homemade caramels, bread, gingerbread and many a Summer or Holiday feast.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, four of her siblings, her husband and one great grandson. She is survived by a brother Donald Hopkins and a sister Betty Olson, her daughters Susan (Briant) Smith, Barbara (Randy) Gadd, Linda (Michael) Webb, nine grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.

By Alice's strict direction, only a viewing is to be held, followed by graveside services. The viewing will be held on Thursday, February 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St. Midvale, UT. Graveside services will follow on Friday, February 22, at 11:00 am at the Midvale City Cemetery. Alice's family would like to acknowledge the help and support given by Aspire Hospice, with special thanks to Kalie, Luna and Shelly Kimball for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Church Mission Fund.
