Mary Lou Fowler Robinson passed away on December 21, 2018, due to complications of old age. She was born at home on Bryan Avenue just east of 11th East on August 21, 1925, to William Henry Fowler and Vera Marie Iversen. She was the sixth child born into a household of a ten-year-old sister, and four rambunctious boys! She was destined to be a tomboy.
Mary Lou grew up just north of Sugarhouse on Eleventh East. She graduated from South High in 1942 and immediately beat the streets of Salt Lake looking for the highest paying job she could find. She worked for a variety of downtown businesses, including the Capitol Theater, Dinwoodey Furniture Company, the Farm Bureau, the Salt Lake Desk Exchange, the Salt Lake Dental Lab and Intermountain Clinic, as a cashier, bookkeeper and office manager.
On February 11, 1945, she married Richard Gordon Robinson in the front room of her mother's home a few houses away from where she was born. Together, they raised three boys - Scott Lawrence born in 1946, Richard Frank (Ike) born in 1947 and Cortney Jack (Cort) born in 1956.
A few years after Cort's birth, Mary Lou retired to devote herself to her family and to almost everything athletic. She was an Esther Williams kind of swimmer and diver. She became a long-distance runner, winning several marathons in her age group. And she learned to hit a pesky white ball better than most men! She served as president of the Women's Golf Associations for both Mountain Dell and Bonneville.
In 1986, Dick and Mary Lou divorced, and she went back to work, owning and operating a Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream store in Kearns until the copper mine closed and business dried up. She then began to devote her time fully to the Church, performing temple work nearly on a daily basis.
Her twilight years were not the best. It was hard for an accomplished athlete to hang it up and settle into a rocking chair! But a delightful sense of humor and the great joy found from devotion to her grandchildren and to her Church were all that was needed to keep her going for more than 93 years.
In addition to her sons Scott (Jane), Ike and Cort (Cindy Jo), Mary Lou is survived by her brother Michael, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, her sister Thelma and six brothers - William Marcus, Lane, Jay Howard, James, Jack Emmett and Lewis.
The family wishes to express its deep appreciation for the kindness and loving care provided to our Mother by the nurses and aides at both Legacy House of South Jordan and Cornerstone Home Health and Hospice Care.
